Daniel and the Lions' Den
A Children's Bible Story
Darius became king of Babylon at age 62, and assigned three Administrators who
oversaw 120 princes to rule over his kingdom. Daniel distinguished himself among all
others by his exceptional skill, and the king thought to put him in charge of his entire
kingdom.
The other administrators and princes became jealous of Daniel and tried to find ways to
discredit him. However, they could find no corruption in him, as he was honest and
trustworthy.
Then these men realized that they would not find anything against Daniel, unless they
could find something concerning the law of his God. These Administrators and princes
assembled together and said: “O King Darius, live forever!”
They consulted together to establish a royal decree, which stated that during the next
thirty days anyone who prays to a God or a man other than the king, would be thrown
into the lions’ den.
Daniel heard of the decree, but continued to give thanks and pray to his God, as he had
always done.
Then these men assembled and found Daniel praying
to God. He was arrested and brought before the
king. King Darius liked Daniel very much and did not
want him thrown to the lions, but it was too late to
change the royal decree.
So Daniel was cast into the den of lions, and a large
stone was placed in front of it to seal the entrance.
The king did not sleep much all night. He fasted and
thought about Daniel. He arose very early in the
morning and hurried to the lions’ den. He was hoping
that Daniel’s God had saved him.
When he came to the lions’ den he found out that
Daniel’s God was indeed great, for he had sent an
angel to shut the lions’ mouths, protecting Daniel.
So, to the king’s delight, Daniel was freed, uninjured,
from the den of lions. The king thereby ordered the
men who had accused Daniel cast into the lions’ den.
